무나씨

당신과 나, 우리의 관계는 가까워지면 가까워질수록 점점 복잡하고 미묘하게 변해갈 거예요. 또 서로를 알게 되면 알게 될수록 당신과 나를 나누는 경계는 점점 모호하고 흐릿하게 변해갈 것입니다. 그래서 아주 먼 미래에는 나와 당신을 구분하지 못하게 되는 지경까지 가게 될지도 모르는 일이지요. 자신이 어떤 사람이었는지 완전히 잃어버린 채 말이지요. 아, 관계란 두렵고 두려운 일입니다! 그래서 나는 당신과 나의 관계를 조금 멀리 떨어져 단순하게 바라보기로 했어요.

나와 당신이 먼발치에서 서로를 알아보고 다가오는 장면에서부터 서로를 알아보고 한 걸음씩 다가와 결국 사랑에 빠지게 되는 그 장면까지를 멀리서 지켜보는 것이지요. 어떤 무언극을 감상하는 것처럼 말이에요. 그것은 아마도 무대 위에 등장한 두 사람이 슬며시 다가와 서로를 만지고 탐색하고 끌어안고 또 밀쳐내 멀어지기도 하는 아주 느리고 연속적인 행위들의 반복일 뿐일 거예요. 무의미해 보이는 그런 행위의 반복을 바라보고 있을 때, 아마도 나는 그들의 몸짓에 내포된 의미를 찾으려 하기보다 그 둘의 몸짓이 서로 겹치고 비켜나며 만들어내는 다양한 곡선과 면의 변화를 감상하게 될 것 같아요. 빛을 받아 하얗게 빛나는 면과 그림자가 져 어두운 면이 서로 이어지고 떨어질 때 반짝이는 몸의 빛깔은 얼마나 다채롭고 아름다울까요. 무한하게 출렁이며 해안가에 부딪히는 파도를 바라보는 것처럼 즐거운 일일 거예요. 시각적인 즐거움이 아니라면, 청각이나 촉각, 후각을 동원하여 바라보아도 마찬가지일 겁니다. 그들이 움직일 때마다 내는 리드미컬한 발소리, 열기가 달아오르고 식을 때 나는 체취, 그들이 부딪칠 때마다 쓸리고 출렁이는 살의 움직임, 그런 것들을 관찰하는 일은 정말이지 지루할 틈이 없는 일일 거예요.

당신과 나의 만남과 헤어짐이라는 사건은, 미묘하고 모호해서 파악하기 힘든, 손에 잡히지 않는 추상적인 감정과 감정의 충돌만이 아닙니다. 마음과 마음이 통하기 이전에, 그보다 더 실재적인 몸과 몸의 만남이기도 한 것이지요. 당신과 내가 만날 때, 눈에 보이지도 손에 잡히지도 않는 마음과 마음의 관계성 때문에 두려워하기보다, 내가 느끼는 소리와 감촉, 시각적인 즐거움에 대해 먼저 집중해보려고 해요. 그렇게 하면, 우리의 관계가 우리의 만남이 조금은 쉬워질지도 모르니까요.

"As relationships grow and deepen, to a point where I lose myself, the borders separating the others and I start to dismantle."

People meet and part to form relations. To Moonassi, the repetitive interactions arise from relationships are just like scenes laid out in a pantomime, which do not need specific explanation or description. Rather than forcing an explanation or meaning to these interactions, he chooses to focus on what the protagonists formulate on stage just as how his paintings capture the moment and actuality of interactions.

Relationships are abstract and difficult to define in one word. Sensations of the body on the other hand, seem honest and clear. The body in this sense is often the channel to materialize the intangible. The converging and diverging movements are represented by the curvy lines, the sunlight forms perfectly white planes and the shadows construct dark planes. Together they create a sense of diversity and tranquility.
The gaze and body gestures encompass his world view. The infinite shifting presence, emotions and questions for relationships touch us profoundly through the dark ink strokes. Hundreds and thousands of countless intricate lines depict borders between oneself and the others, which remind us of the uncertainties in relationships.

Moonassi centers his thoughts around relationships yet avoids defining it, neither does he demand answers from the viewers. The artist simply hopes to emphasize the physical sensations rather than on the ambiguous and immaterial borders of intimacy. He is simply telling the story of relationships as they are.

"I want to first focus on the sound, contact and visual joy I feel, rather than on the fear of the intangible and invisible heart to heart connection when I meet you. I think this makes our relationship and encounter slightly lighter"
